Ashburton Cricket Club

We are 'Twinned or Sistered' with an Australian club - Ashburton Cricket Club.

Cameron Skermer and other members with touring sides have played at Chipperfield. Here is some information on Ashburton C.C for your reference.

Ashburton is a residential neighbourhood in the Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria.

The Club was founded 120 years ago. Their club colours are Green and Gold.

The Cricket club's home ground is Ashburton Park, where their 1st and 2nd teams play on a Turf pitch. Their 3rd team play on a non-turf pitch about 500 yards away.

The club only have use of their ground from October until March. During the Australian winter, the ground is used for soccer, with the cricket wicket being in the centre of the pitch. The cricket wicket consists of only five strips and is maintained, like most grounds in Melbourne, by the local authority. Watering is done by means of sprinklers in the outfield, which come on at pre-arranged times.

The club run three sides and compete in the Eastern Cricket Association (ECA). The first team play in what is known as the 'Senior Grade Turf' competition. Ashburton do not run junior sides at present, although there is legislation coming into their league stipulating that all senior clubs must run junior sides by the year 2000, or face the risk of relegation.

Like most other competitions in Melbourne, the club only plays fixtures on Saturday's. The first two games of the season are 'one dayers', 40 overs a side. The other nine games consist of 77 overs per day, starting at 1.00pm and finishing about 6.00pm with a twenty minute tea interval at 3.20pm.

These games are spread over two consecutive Saturdays. Basically, one team bats the first week and the other the second. Whoever gets most runs gets 6 points for a first innings victory. It is possible to have a two innings match with the winner collecting ten points for an 'outright' win but this is quiet a rarity.

At the end of the season, "'l the top four clubs in the table (or 'ladder' as they call it), play in a semi-final, played over a weekend. The two successful teams then compete in a Grand Final, played over four days, two weekends.

The season starts in October and continues until the end of February, with a two week break for Christmas. The only Sunday cricket played is where Saturday games have been cancelled because of tile weather and are re-arranged.

Although only a few games are played, there is a big emphasis on midweek training, which takes place twice a week. Pre-match training also takes place on the day of the match.

Ashburton have their own club house which is shared with the soccer club. They have their own small bar and organise a number of social functions. Subscriptions are about £50 per year.
